We can use Human Design to help us discover our authentic selves and live more aligned with who we are (instead of beating ourselves up for who we think we need to be). Our authentic self is an important resource for healing. For healing is not just working on our diet and increasing exercise, but includes returning to our true selves fully and completely and releasing any conditioning that has kept us from that.
Sometimes when we think about our authentic selves, we believe that its a perfect and brilliant human being with a strong will that gets stuff done and whom everybody likes. This is only one of the dangerous assumptions that actually takes us away from our authentic selves.
Finding your Authentic Self through Human Design
Reading the map of Human Design, you can understand the traits of your authentic self – your strengths, what kind of work is optimum for you, and your particular way of being. It also provides you with an understanding of what you are here to learn and grow. Our authentic self is not a perfected self, its a self that is designed to grow. We forget that being our authentic self is not about being perfect nor ever achieving perfection. Instead we have been designed to wrestle with certain doubts, conflicts, and conundrums to gain experience and wisdom. Beliefs such as
“I have to prove that I am enough.”
“I need to make you happy.”
“I have to do 110%.”
“If I can just get it all done, then I can rest.”
“I need certainty. I plan months ahead.”
come from the doubts intentionally woven into your design. When we realize there is no amount of achievement, willpower, and proving that will permanently change these feelings, it releases us to, instead, learn and become wise about these aspects of being human. And to forever keep learning about them (there is no destination, its a forever journey)! Thus, having these feelings or beliefs is not because you are broken and need to be fixed. The error (and suffering) rests in trying to be perfect. Instead, recognize the areas of your human design chart designed for your growth and focus on learning from them!!

Finding the Authentic Self’s Areas of Growth
Observing the centers is one of the areas where you can find these designed ‘struggles.’ The centers are the nine boxes and triangles you see in a chart. Some will appear colored in and others have no color. One of the places where we can find these points of growth is through our open centers. How? By having doubts about the theme of these centers and experiencing them in an infinite amount of ways. Lets look at these centers in detail.
These open centers can also be seen as motivators to learning. Just think, Einstein had the very top triangle, the head center, open. He was always trying to figure things out. As he became older, he stopped trying to figure it all out himself and realized that what was most important was to ask the right questions. The answers, he discovered, would come to him when least expected. Notice which one of these centers you have open. How do these ‘doubts’ show up in your life?
Learning from the Open Centers
Once you understand that those old beliefs about not being enough or needing to prove your worth will never disappear (because they aren’t supposed to!), we can instead focus on what we are here to learn from those areas of our design. So what does each center teach us?
Being Your Authentic Self Through the Lens of Human Design
Thus being our authentic self requires we realize that we are OK just the way we are. Recognize that there is no amount of hard work, loving partners, titles and degrees, perfection, or control that will take away these aspects of being human… Instead work with them. Learn to be curious, loving of yourself, respect your self as if you have value, honor your feelings, work when its correct for you, and take breaks because…you are only human after all!
